Two carriages filled with liquefied natural gas blew up when the train derailed as it left the station at Viareggio, a Tuscan city north-west of Pisa.
The carriages ploughed into several homes near the train station in the seaside town, engulfing the houses in flame and causing the collapse of at least one building.
Five people were killed when their house collapsed, while a sixth victim was riding a scooter along the rail line when the train derailed, said Raffaele Gargiulo, a police spokesman in the nearby city of Lucca. The injured suffered severe burns, he added.
Fire chief Antonio Gambardella told Italy’s RAI state TV that the blaze was being contained but there was still the risk that other carriages containing gas would explode.
Firefighters were battling flames while digging through the rubble of collapsed or burnt homes looking for casualties, Mr Gambardella said, adding that there could be more victims.
The train, which was coming from the northern city of La Spezia and heading for Pisa derailed just before midnight shortly after passing through Viareggio’s train station, Mr Gargiulo said. Puma Shoes
The train’s two engineers, who were only slightly injured, said they felt an impact around 600 feet (180 metres) outside the station, shortly before the train flew off the tracks.
